PM Shehbaz Urges Unity and Tolerance on World Interfaith Harmony Week

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday underscored the need for dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation among diverse religious communities to foster interfaith harmony in Pakistan.

In his message on the occasion of World Interfaith Harmony Week (Feb 1–7), the premier reaffirmed the country's commitment to religious coexistence, in line with Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's vision.

“Pakistan remains steadfast in its constitutional oath to protect every citizen’s right to belief, dignity, and equality,” he stated. “Our faith, rooted in Islam’s teachings of justice, mercy, and respect for all creation, compels us to lead by example.”

Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the government’s efforts in promoting social cohesion through inclusive policies. He highlighted Pakistan’s Interfaith Harmony Policy and Strategy of Religious Tolerance, which aims to counter hate speech and ensure the protection of all places of worship.

“To those who sow hatred, we respond with dialogue. To those who preach fear, we answer with courage. To those who divide, we build bridges,” he asserted.

Acknowledging the persistent challenges of extremism and divisive rhetoric, the prime minister called upon religious scholars, community leaders, and citizens to play an active role in strengthening social unity.

A Global Call for Religious Understanding

World Interfaith Harmony Week was first proposed at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2010 by King Abdullah II of Jordan. The initiative was unanimously adopted, with the aim of promoting peace and religious dialogue among different faiths. It builds upon the principles of "A Common Word," a 2007 initiative that sought to unite Muslims and Christians on the shared values of "Love of God and Love of Neighbor."

The observance encourages religious communities, scholars, and policymakers to collaborate in advancing tolerance, mutual respect, and understanding. Across the world, events and discussions during this week highlight the importance of interfaith dialogue in countering religious discrimination and fostering global harmony.

As Pakistan joins the international community in celebrating World Interfaith Harmony Week, the prime minister expressed hope that these values would inspire citizens to work towards a peaceful and inclusive society.
