Lahore, September 23, 2024 — The Lahore High Court today rejected the post-arrest bail petition of Irfan Yousaf, who is accused of being involved in the Jaranwala attack that took place on August 16, 2023. The case, titled Irfan Yousaf vs. The State, was presented before a Division Bench of the Lahore High Court, comprising Honourable Mr. Justice Syed Shehbaz Ali Rizvi and Honourable Mr. Justice Tariq Nadeem.

The Jaranwala incident shocked the nation when mobs attacked Christian communities, leading to the widespread destruction of homes and churches. Irfan Yousaf is among those accused of inciting and participating in these attacks. His post-arrest bail application was a highly anticipated move, given the gravity of the charges against him.

During today’s hearing, the prosecution, led by the Deputy Prosecutor General of Punjab, presented critical evidence against Yousaf. This included video and electronic evidence submitted by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA). The evidence reportedly shows Yousaf’s involvement in the violence that took place during the Jaranwala incident.

Advocates from the International Minority Rights Forum (IMRF), representing the affected Christian families, strongly opposed the bail, emphasizing the severity of the crime and the clear evidence against the accused.

After carefully reviewing the video and forensic evidence, the Division Bench concluded that the evidence was compelling enough to deny bail. The bench agreed with the prosecution and the IMRF advocates, stating that granting bail in such cases would not be appropriate given the potential threat to justice and public safety.

Speaking to Pak Chrisitan News (PCN)  an IMRF representative expressed satisfaction with the decision. "The video and forensic evidence were clear, and the court rightly upheld the need for justice. We will continue to pursue justice for the victims of this horrific attack."

The legal team confirmed that they are preparing a comprehensive legal strategy to ensure that all those responsible for the Jaranwala incident face full legal consequences. A certified copy of the court's order has been requested, which will be used to further strengthen the ongoing case against Yousaf and others involved in the Jaranwala attack. The families of the victims expressed their relief, hoping that this marks a step toward justice and accountability.

This ruling is seen as a significant moment in the larger campaign against religious violence in Pakistan, with many activists and legal experts lauding the court’s firm stance on the issue. The court’s decision has drawn mixed reactions across the country. Many human rights organizations have praised the move, seeing it as a crucial step toward curbing religious intolerance and protecting minority communities. However, some groups have raised concerns over potential backlash from extremist elements, calling on authorities to ensure the safety of those affected.

Samuel Payara, Chairman of IMRF, told PCN that the rejection of Irfan Yousaf’s bail marks a significant turning point in the Jaranwala case. He emphasized that this decision reflects the court's commitment to addressing cases of religious violence with the gravity they warrant. As the trial progresses, attention will remain focused on the Lahore High Court, with many hoping that justice will be served for the victims of the Jaranwala attack.
