Sara Yaqoob (Pak
Christian News): Sonia Ma'am, congratulations on your recent appointment as
the Parliamentary Secretary for the Human Rights Committee in Punjab. This is a
historic moment, being the first Christian woman to hold such a position. How
do you feel about this achievement?
Sonia Ashar: Thank you very
much. It is indeed a significant milestone, not just for me personally, but for
the entire Christian community in Punjab. This appointment is a testament to
the progress we're making in terms of representation and inclusion. I see it as
a great responsibility and an opportunity to serve my community and the broader
society.
Sara: What
will be your primary focus as you step into this new role?
Sonia Ashar: My primary
focus will be on uplifting the marginalized segments of our society,
particularly within the Christian community. There are many areas where our
community is still struggling, especially in terms of education, youth
development, and women's empowerment. I am committed to addressing these
challenges head-on. For instance, I have been advocating for better educational
opportunities and have already made strides in securing a 2% quota for women,
medical, and job placements. However, the real challenge now lies in ensuring
that these quotas are implemented effectively.
Sara: You
mentioned the issue of rising rape cases. How do you plan to tackle this
alarming trend?
Sonia Ashar: The increasing
number of rape cases is deeply concerning. My approach will be twofold:
firstly, working on preventive measures by improving the socio-economic
conditions that often lead to such crimes; and secondly, ensuring that there
are stringent legal actions in place to deter such acts. I will work closely
with law enforcement agencies and legal experts to create an environment where
such heinous acts are significantly reduced. It's crucial that we create safer
conditions, especially for women and girls, and this will be one of my top
priorities.
Sara:
Development in underprivileged areas has always been a challenge. How do you
plan to address this?
Sonia Ashar: Development in
underprivileged areas is indeed a significant challenge. Many regions in
Punjab, especially those with minority populations, remain underdeveloped and
neglected. My goal is to bring these areas to the forefront of development
initiatives. This includes not only infrastructure development but also
ensuring access to clean water and healthcare, which are basic human rights.
The rise in diseases due to contaminated water is unacceptable, and I am
committed to addressing these issues. I am currently in discussions with
various stakeholders, including the Minister, to develop a comprehensive
strategy for these areas.
Sara: This is
the first time in Punjab’s history that a Christian woman has been appointed as
a Parliamentary Secretary. How do you view this development for minorities?
Sonia Ashar: This
appointment is a major breakthrough for minorities, particularly for the
Christian community. It signals that our contributions are being recognized and
that there is a willingness to integrate us into the decision-making processes.
I see this as a gift—a gift of opportunity to address long-standing issues that
have been overlooked. It also sets a precedent for future generations, showing
them that no matter the challenges, it is possible to achieve significant
positions if we remain committed and focused.
Sara: What
challenges do you anticipate in your new role?
Sonia Ashar: Challenges are
inevitable, and they come at every step, whether big or small. My journey to
this position has been filled with challenges, and I expect that there will be
many more to face. However, I believe that challenges are not to be feared but
to be overcome. With the trust that has been placed in me by my leaders and the
community, I am confident that I will be able to address these challenges
effectively. My focus is not on the obstacles but on what we can achieve and
how we can achieve it.
Sara:
Finally, what message do you have for the Christian youth and women who look up
to you as a role model?
Sonia Ashar: My message to
the Christian youth and women is simple: believe in yourselves and never shy
away from pursuing your dreams. We need to bring our community, especially the
youth, into the spotlight. Women's empowerment is also crucial, and we must
work together to uplift each other. I am committed to creating more
opportunities and providing a platform for our youth and women to shine. With
God's grace, I am here to serve, and I will do everything in my power to make a
positive impact.
Sara: Thank
you, Sonia Ma'am, for your time and insightful answers. We wish you all the
best in your new role.
Sonia Ashar: Thank you for having me. It’s an honour to serve, and I look forward to making a meaningful difference.
