In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, United States Ambassador Donald Bloom met with Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday to discuss a range of security-related issues and mutual interests. The discussion underscored the importance of enhancing cooperation in combating terrorism and narcotics trafficking, as well as strengthening overall security measures.
A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to hold a joint ‘Law Enforcement Dialogue’ in October this year. Minister Naqvi highlighted the critical role of US support in fortifying Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies. He also emphasized the recent discussions in New York aimed at fostering collaboration between the Islamabad Police and the New York Police Department, with a delegation from Islamabad Police set to visit New York to explore further cooperation, including training programs.
Naqvi reiterated the Pakistani government's commitment to protecting all minorities, including Christians, and stressed their equal rights under the Constitution. This pledge comes in the wake of concerns from Christian communities about their safety and protection. The minister reassured that all those accused in the recent Jaranwala tragedy, where Christian properties were targeted, have been arrested and brought before the court.
Christian leaders in Pakistan have expressed their appreciation for the government's efforts but continue to urge for more robust measures to ensure their safety and equal treatment. The international community, particularly the US, has been closely monitoring the situation, with Ambassador Bloom likely addressing these concerns during his discussions with Pakistani officials.
The meeting also touched upon other areas of mutual interest, including the successful hosting of the T20 World Cup in the US, which marked America's emergence as a new hub for international cricket. Minister Naqvi expressed his ongoing efforts to organize a tri-nation series between Pakistan, the USA, and Canada, as well as a cricket league between the USA and Canada. Ambassador Bloom commended the well-organized matches and the enjoyment of numerous fans.
In attendance at the meeting were Secretary Interior Khurram Ali Agha, Chief Commissioner Islamabad Mohammad Ali Randhawa, and IG Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi, highlighting the high-level engagement on these critical issues.
The collaboration between Pakistan and the US on security matters, coupled with a focus on the protection of religious minorities, signals a strengthened bilateral relationship and a commitment to addressing the concerns of vulnerable communities within Pakistan.
