Police Arrest Key Suspects as Investigation Progresses in Sargodha Mob Violence Case


On May 26, 2024, significant strides have been made in the investigation following the violent clash reported on May 25, 2024, where a mob of hundreds attacked police officers and vandalized property. According to police sources, over 40 individuals have been arrested as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice.

The incident saw the mob wielding stones, sticks, and firearms against the police, resulting in multiple injuries and extensive damage to public and private property. The police response involved the use of tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. The altercation led to the damage of three police vehicles, the torching of two public buses, and the vandalism of several shops and homes.

During the operation, several police officers were injured by the mob. Three police vehicles were severely damaged, two public buses were set ablaze, and several shops and houses in the vicinity were vandalized.

In response to the incident, an extensive investigation was launched, with police recording witness statements and analyzing available evidence to identify the suspects. Among those arrested are key figures believed to have incited the violence, including Irfan Gondal, his father Ayyub Gondal, and several Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) activists.

The case has been registered under sections 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house etc.), 440 (mischief committed after preparation made for causing death or hurt), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (every member of an unlawful assembly guilty of offense committed in prosecution of common object), 7ATA (Anti-Terrorism Act), and 11WW (pertaining to unlawful activities).

Police are confident that with the arrests made, further incidents can be prevented, ensuring law and order in the area. The investigation continues, with more arrests anticipated as additional suspects are identified.

The attack on Nazir Masih's house in Sargodha was prompted by accusations of desecrating the Quran, which were allegedly fabricated by Irfan Gondal and his associates. The mob's violence was reportedly fueled by previous altercations and jealousy over Masih's business success. During the police operations, various weapons and materials used in the attack were recovered, further implicating the detained individuals.

Authorities remain committed to ensuring justice and maintaining peace within the community. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to identify and apprehend any remaining suspects involved in the violence.
